Hindu Rope Hoya Variegated
Hoya carnosa 'Compacta Variegata'
The rarest form of Hindu Rope — twisted waxy vines with stunning cream, pink, and green variegation. A slow-growing collector's gem that's worth every bit of patience.
Overview
Hindu Rope Hoya Variegated is one of the most sought-after collector plants available — it combines the dramatic twisted rope form of Hindu Rope with stunning cream, pink, and green variegation that shifts with the light. It's significantly slower-growing than the solid green form and requires more light to maintain its variegation. This is a plant for patient collectors — it rewards careful, attentive care with extraordinary beauty.
Care Requirements
Light
Bright Indirect Light — needs more light than the solid green form to maintain variegation; some direct morning sun is beneficial
Water
Every 2–3 weeks — allow soil to dry completely; even more drought-tolerant than the solid form due to reduced chlorophyll
Humidity
Moderate (40–60%) — tolerates average home humidity
Soil
Very well-draining mix — orchid bark, perlite, and a small amount of potting mix; drainage is absolutely critical
Temperature
65–85°F (18–29°C) — slightly warmer than the solid form; protect from any cold drafts
Fertilizer
Diluted balanced fertilizer every 6–8 weeks during spring and summer — variegated forms are more sensitive to over-fertilizing
Detailed Care Guide
Light
- Needs bright indirect light — more than the solid green form due to reduced chlorophyll in variegated leaves
- Some direct morning sun (1–2 hours) is beneficial and enhances the pink and cream coloring
- Avoid harsh afternoon direct sun which can scorch the leaves
- Insufficient light causes the variegation to revert toward solid green
Watering
- Water every 2–3 weeks — allow soil to dry completely between waterings
- Even more drought-tolerant than the solid green form — when in doubt, wait
- In winter, reduce to every 4–6 weeks or less
- Overwatering is the #1 cause of death — variegated forms are even more susceptible to root rot
Soil
- Very well-draining mix is absolutely critical — orchid bark, perlite, and a small amount of potting mix
- Drainage is even more important than with the solid green form
- A chunky, airy mix mimics the plant's natural epiphytic growing conditions
- Repot only when root-bound — variegated Hindu Rope is even more sensitive to repotting stress
Temperature & Humidity
- Prefers slightly warmer temperatures than the solid form — 65–85°F (18–29°C)
- Protect from any cold drafts — more temperature-sensitive than the solid green form
- Moderate humidity (40–60%) is sufficient
- Keep away from cold windowsills and AC vents
Difficulty Level
Intermediate — Variegated Hindu Rope requires more light than the solid form, is slower-growing, and more sensitive to overwatering. It rewards patient, attentive care with extraordinary beauty. Not recommended as a first hoya.
Extra Notes
Pet safe — completely non-toxic to cats, dogs, and humans. This is one of the most valuable and sought-after collector plants — treat it with extra care. The slow growth is completely normal. NEVER remove old flower spurs. The variegation is most vibrant on new growth — older leaves naturally become slightly more muted.
Pro Tip
The variegation is most intense on new growth — to encourage new leaves, ensure the plant gets bright indirect light and is slightly root-bound. New leaves with the most vibrant cream and pink coloring emerge in spring and summer.

Just Received This Plant?
If you just received a cutting or node: this is one of the most delicate cuttings to root. Wrap the node in damp (not wet) sphagnum moss and seal in a clear plastic bag. Keep at 75°F+ in bright indirect light. Check every 2 weeks — do not let the moss dry out completely. Roots form in 5–8 weeks. Once roots are visible and 1 inch long, pot into a very well-draining hoya mix. Do not water for 1 week after potting. This plant is slow and precious — treat it with extra care.
If you just received a potted plant: unbox with extra care — this is a precious, slow-growing plant. Place in bright indirect light immediately — the variegated form needs more light than the solid green version. Water only if the soil is bone dry, and then only lightly. Do not fertilize for 8 weeks. Do not repot for at least 6–12 months. Expect very slow growth — this is normal. Check for any old flower spurs and leave them completely intact. Treat this plant with extra care and patience.
Basic Care Instructions
Place in bright indirect light with some morning sun, water every 2–3 weeks allowing soil to dry completely, and maintain moderate humidity. Fertilize every 6–8 weeks in spring and summer with diluted fertilizer. Never remove old flower spurs. Slow growth is completely normal.
Propagation
Stem cuttings with 2–3 nodes root in sphagnum moss in 5–8 weeks — slower than the solid form. Choose cuttings with good variegation. Keep warm (75°F+), humid, and in bright indirect light. Patience is essential — this is one of the slowest-rooting hoyas.
Common Problems & Fixes
Reverting to solid green
