Marble Snow Queen Pothos
Epipremnum aureum 'Snow Queen'
Heavily marbled white and green leaves on a fast-trailing vine — one of the most striking pothos varieties and surprisingly easy to grow.
Overview
Marble Snow Queen Pothos is a highly variegated cultivar of the classic golden pothos, featuring heart-shaped leaves marbled in bright white and green — some leaves are nearly all white. The heavy variegation makes it one of the most visually dramatic pothos varieties available, and because it has less chlorophyll than standard pothos, it grows a bit more slowly and needs slightly more light to thrive. It's still an easy, forgiving plant that trails beautifully from a hanging basket or climbs a moss pole. A must-have for pothos collectors.
Care Requirements
Light
Bright Indirect Light — more light needed than standard pothos to support the heavy variegation
Water
Every 1–2 weeks — allow soil to dry out completely between waterings
Humidity
Moderate (40–60%) — tolerates average home humidity; higher humidity encourages larger leaves
Soil
Well-draining potting mix — standard potting soil with added perlite
Temperature
60–85°F (15–29°C) — protect from temperatures below 55°F
Fertilizer
Balanced liquid fertilizer every 4 weeks during spring and summer; stop fertilizing in fall and winter
Detailed Care Guide
Light
- Needs bright indirect light to maintain the vivid white variegation — more than standard pothos
- Low light causes the white portions to shrink and new leaves to emerge mostly green
- Some gentle morning direct sun (1–2 hours) is tolerated and encourages faster growth
- Avoid harsh afternoon direct sun which can scorch the white leaf sections
Watering
- Water every 1–2 weeks — allow soil to dry out completely between waterings
- The white leaf sections are more susceptible to rot than green pothos — err on the dry side
- Water thoroughly, then allow to drain completely — never let it sit in standing water
- Reduce watering in winter
Soil
- Use a well-draining potting mix — standard potting soil with 20–30% perlite
- Good drainage prevents root rot, which is a higher risk with heavily variegated plants
- Repot every 1–2 years in spring when roots fill the pot
- Neutral to slightly acidic pH (6.0–7.0) is ideal
Temperature & Humidity
- Prefers 60–85°F (15–29°C) — standard tropical houseplant temperature range
- Tolerates average home humidity (40–60%) well
- Higher humidity (50–70%) encourages larger, more dramatic leaves
- Keep away from cold drafts and air conditioning vents
Difficulty Level
Easy — Snow Queen Pothos is forgiving and fast-growing once established. The main difference from standard pothos is that it needs more light to keep the white variegation vivid. Get the light right and it's as easy as any pothos.
Extra Notes
Toxic to cats, dogs, and humans — contains calcium oxalate crystals that cause oral irritation and vomiting if ingested. Keep out of reach of pets and children. When propagating, avoid cuttings that are entirely white — they have no chlorophyll and cannot photosynthesize. Always choose cuttings with at least some green for the best rooting success.
Pro Tip
Snow Queen Pothos is a light-responsive plant — the more bright indirect light it gets, the more white it produces. If you want those dramatic, heavily marbled leaves, give it your brightest indirect spot. Pull it back from the light and it will slowly revert toward green as it compensates for lower light levels.
New to this plant?
Just Received This Plant?
If you just received a cutting or node: place in a glass of water in bright indirect light. Roots form in 2–3 weeks. Once roots are 1–2 inches long, pot into a well-draining mix. Keep the soil lightly moist while it establishes — do not overwater.
If you just received a potted plant: unbox and place in bright indirect light right away — the variegation needs light to stay vivid. Do not water unless the soil is completely dry. Do not fertilize for 6–8 weeks. Expect the first few new leaves to be smaller than usual as it settles in.
Basic Care Instructions
Place in bright indirect light to maintain vivid white variegation, water every 1–2 weeks allowing soil to dry completely, and maintain average home humidity. Use a well-draining potting mix. Fertilize every 4 weeks in spring and summer.
Propagation
Stem cuttings with 1–2 nodes root readily in water in 2–3 weeks. Choose cuttings with a good mix of white and green — all-white cuttings lack chlorophyll and may not root successfully. Pot into well-draining mix once roots are 1–2 inches long.
Common Problems & Fixes
New leaves coming in all green — losing variegation
Needs more light — move to a brighter spot with bright indirect light to restore the white marbling
Yellowing leaves
Usually overwatering — allow soil to dry completely between waterings and ensure good drainage
Brown crispy patches on white leaf sections
Low humidity or too much direct sun — increase humidity and move away from harsh afternoon light
